The problem of hand-lung synchronization with a metered-dose inhaler

When the patient presses the spray to release a puff of medication, the drug particles contained in the metered-dose inhaler are expelled at high speed into the mouth.

To ensure these particles are deposited deep within the lungs, where they are truly needed, it is essential to synchronize inhalation with the release of the spray (hand-lung coordination). In young children and the elderly, hand-lung coordination can be difficult.

Poor hand-lung coordination or improper handling means that most of the medication is deposited in the oral cavity and trachea without reaching the lungs. This can potentially cause undesirable side effects (for inhaled corticosteroid treatments) and significantly reduces the effectiveness of the treatment.

The usefulness of an inhalation chamber

Complementary to metered-dose inhalers, inhalation chambers help to overcome the problem of hand-lung coordination, thus avoiding side effects.

Thanks to its technical specificities, TipsHaler® makes it possible to limit the impaction of particles at the level of the throat while promoting deposition at the level of the lower levels of the lung, where the drug particles are really needed.
